McCoy's 5A (modified) is a universal medium that supports many types of primary cells, established cells lines as well as the proliferation of explants from biopsied tissue. This medium supports the growth of primary mammalian cells derived from normal bone marrow, skin, spleen, kidney, lung, rat embryo, and other tissues.

Dr.Thomas McCoy originally formulated McCoy's 5A medium as a modified version of Basal Medium 5A. Unlike other media, McCoy's 5A contains the reducing agent glutathione, bacterial peptone, and high concentrations of glucose. This product also includes Dr. Hsu Hanks' salt additive to support use outside of a CO
2 incubator.

To ensure supply chain stability, we also offer the same Gibco™ McCoy's 5A (modified) product (22300-021) manufactured in our Scottish factory. Gibco™ McCoy's 5A (modified) requires serum supplement, usually 10% added
Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). Gibco™ McCoy's 5A (modified) uses a sodium bicarbonate buffer system (2.2 g/L) and therefore requires a 5–10% CO
2 environment to maintain physiological pH.
