Borates are a known contaminant in laboratory water sources . In chromatography, borate contamination in chromatographic eluents may cause degradation of deionized water treatment systems or the formation of borosilicate glassy scale. Borate contamination in the eluate can cause a significant reduction in peak efficiency, especially for mannose, fructose and reducing monosaccharides. If borate is present in the eluate, it can adsorb to both the anion exchange column and the carbohydrate analyte. Carbohydrate borate complexes elute less efficiently from anion exchange columns than carbohydrates, causing peak tailing, especially in the presence of adjacent cis hydroxyl groups, as in the case of mannose and sugar alcohols.
