Easy Viability Measurement
SYTOX® Green can quickly measure cell viability using a flow cytometer, fluorescence microscope, fluorometer or fluorescence microplate reader. It does not penetrate intact cell membranes, but it can easily penetrate damaged cell membranes, which is a characteristic of dead cells. Since fluorescence is enhanced >500-fold when bound to nucleic acids, brief incubation with dead cells using SYTOX® Green produces bright green fluorescence when excited by a 488 nm argon ion laser or any other 450–490 nm light source , the emission peak is 523 nm. The signal produced by dead cells is very bright, so SYTOX® Green is particularly suitable for determining the viability of not only mammalian cells, but also Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
