Sf-900™ II SFM is a serum-free, protein-free insect cell culture medium optimized for Growth and maintenance of Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9 and Sf21) cells, and large-scale production of recombinant proteins using the baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS). The medium is suitable for suspension and monolayer culture methods and supports the growth of other lepidopteran cell lines. Sf-900™ II SFM Features:

Excellent long-term, high-density growth
Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) cells in Sf-900 Growth in ™ II SFM reaches a maximum cell density of 9 to 12 x 10⁶ cells/mL, a significant improvement compared to competitor formulations and Grace Medium (see product brochure). A 20–100% increase in maximum cell density was also observed using the Lymantria dispar (Gypsy moth) and Trichoplusia ni (Tn-368; Trichoplusia exigua) cell lines. The Sf-900™ II SFM is capable of supporting cultures for >20 generations.

Optimized for recombinant protein production
Traditionally, recombinant protein expression is performed using Grace Medium supplemented with 10% FBS. Sf-900™ II SFM is an improved serum-free, protein-free medium designed for the culture of Sf9 and other lepidopteran cell lines and the production of insect viruses and rDNA proteins.

Serum-free, protein-free, ready-to-use formulation
Sf-900™ II SFM is a serum-free, protein-free medium that makes it easier to purify your target protein. Sf-900™ II SFM is ready-to-use; no added serum, glutamine or surfactants are required. Cells adapted to other commercially available serum-free media can be directly added to Sf-900™ II SFM for subculture, usually without further adaptation. Cells often need to adapt to some serum-containing formula.

Scalable in bioreactors
The utility of the Sf-900™ II SFM in large-scale cell culture systems was demonstrated using a 5 L Celligen™ bioreactor. Successful infection with rAcNPV produces rβ-Gal and rEPO (see product manual).

Product Usage
Customers who use Gibco™ Sf-900 II SFM in the production process and have submitted an application to the FDA can request an authorization letter from us to quote our II ClassDrug Master File (DMF).

To ensure a stable supply chain, we produce the Sf-900 II in two separate facilities in Grand Island, New York and Scotland, United Kingdom SFM. Both factories comply with cGMP production requirements, are ISO 13485 certified, and are FDA-registered medical device manufacturers.
