199 Medium was originally developed for nutritional studies of chicken embryo fibroblasts. It has broad species applicability and is particularly suitable for the culture of non-transformed cells. 199 Medium is widely used in virology, vaccine production, and for the in vitro culture of primary explants of mouse pancreatic epithelium and rat lens tissue. We offer a variety of Gibco™ 199 modified media for a wide range of cell culture applications. Use Medium Selection Tool Find the right recipe.

cGMP Manufacturing and Quality System
Gibco™ 199 Medium is manufactured in a cGMP compliant facility in Grand Island, New York. The factory is an FDA-registered medical device manufacturer and is certified to the ISO 13485 standard. To ensure supply chain continuity, we also offer an equivalent Gibco™ 199 media product (31150-022) manufactured in our factory in Scotland. The facility is an FDA-registered medical device manufacturer and is certified to the ISO 13485 standard.

199 Medium does not contain proteins, lipids or growth factors. 199 The culture medium uses a sodium bicarbonate buffer system (2.2 g/L) and therefore requires a 5–10% CO2 environment to maintain physiological pH.
