Guanidine thiocyanate is an ultrapure molecular biology grade reagent. It has no detectable nuclease and protease activity, and since both guanidine cation and thiocyanate anion are chaotropic agents, it is also a strong protein denaturant. It is available in single bottles of 500g each. It is recommended to use it to isolate RNA from various types of samples, especially tissues with high RNase activity such as pancreas. It is known as guanidinium isothiocyanate in solution. Guanidine thiocyanate has been rigorously tested to be free of contaminating non-specific endonuclease, exonuclease and RNase activity.
