The synthetic steroid hormone dexamethasone binds to the glucocorticoid receptor to produce a steroid-receptor complex, which subsequently localizes in the cell nucleus and regulates gene transcription. Although fluorescein dexamethasone binds more slowly than unmodified dexamethasone, this green fluorescent analog can still be used to study the mechanisms of glucocorticoid receptor activation.
