Thermo Scientific Glycogen is a highly purified polysaccharide extracted from oysters. It is an inert carrier that can significantly increase the nucleic acid recovery rate of ethanol precipitation. Glycogen is insoluble in ethanol and can form a precipitate to capture the target nucleic acid. Visible particles are formed during centrifugation, which greatly facilitates the handling of precipitated nucleic acids. Glycogen quantitatively precipitates nucleic acids in dilute solutions more efficiently than tRNA, linear polyacrylamide, or sonicated DNA (See References 1-4).

We offer two aqueous glycogen formulations for fast and efficient DNA or RNA recovery:
Glycogen (RNA Grade) for RNA and DNA precipitation (#R0551)
Glycogen (Molecular Biology Grade), recommended for DNA precipitation (#R0561).

Product Advantages

•Is to improve the concentration of oligonucleotides (>8 bases) and low-content DNA/RNA (> 20 pg) in dilute solutions ) ideal for recovery
• Forms clearly visible particles
• Will not interfere with enzymatic reactions †
• Will not interfere with nucleic acid gel electrophoresis
• Will not interfere with spectrophotometric determination of DNA/ RNA concentration (260 to 280 measured)
• Suitable for DNA transformation and in vitro transfection

Footnotes
†–At final concentrations up to 8 μg/μL, glycogen does not interfere with PCR, DNA sequencing, DNA cleavage with endonucleases, DNA ligation, cDNA synthesis, DNA labeling, in vitroTranscription or bacterial transformation proceeds. Glycogen does not affect in vitro transfection of eukaryotic cells at final concentrations up to 0.4 μg/μL.
