CMRL medium was originally developed by Connaught Medical Research Laboratories to promote the growth of Earle "L" cells under serum-free conditions . CMRL medium is also particularly suitable for cloning monkey kidney cells and the growth of many other mammalian cell lines when horse or fetal calf serum is added.

Gibco™ CMRL media is manufactured in a cGMP compliant facility in Grand Island, New York. The factory is an FDA-registered medical device manufacturer and is certified to the ISO 13485 standard. To ensure a stable supply chain, we also offer the same Gibco™ CMRL media product (21530-027) manufactured in our Scottish facility. The facility is an FDA-registered medical device manufacturer and is certified to the ISO 13485 standard.

CMRL media does not contain proteins or growth factors. Therefore, CMRL culture medium requires supplements, usually 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). CMRL medium uses a sodium bicarbonate buffer system (2.2 g/L) and therefore requires a 5-10% CO₂ environment to maintain physiological pH.
